Exploring the enchanting wine estate of Villa Cosmiana, Tuscany

A Perfect Blend of History, Architecture, and Wine

Welcome to the medieval city of Peccioli, located between Pisa and Volterra.

This week, I took a second visit to a place that caters to the passions of history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and wine connoisseurs alike. The breathtaking estate of Villa Cosmiana, a hidden gem where time seems to stand still.

As we approached the gated entrance of Villa Cosmiana, the anticipation grew. This aristocratic estate, redesigned in the 1850s by its previous owner, Amerigo Antinori, exuded an air of grandeur. The vineyards lining the driveway were the only clue that there was a superior wine production nearby. Our host, Jean-Louis, a charming Parisian with a passion for art, greeted us all warmly and led us through the meticulously restored gardens that surrounded the villa.

The dedication to bringing the property back to life was evident, both inside and out, as Jean-Louis shared tales of its rich history and their vision behind the restoration.

With Jean-Louis’s excellent guidance complete, we were introduced to our second host, Sean, a proud Welshman who stumbled into the wine industry by chance. Sean’s desire to restore a place in Italy for early retirement accidentally led him to Villa Cosmiana, presenting a huge challenge. One which neither had intended to embark on. Yet, instead of settling into a peaceful retirement, they both found themselves immersed in the world of wine, spending countless hours in the vineyards researching the history, and learning the art of wine making from one of Italy’s top female eonologists. The stories and unexpected treasures they shared during our visit left us craving for more, but these secrets really need to be discovered first hand.

The reason Villa Cosmiana has been opened to the public for one day a week, is to allow others to indulge and learn about their exquisite wines. The wine tasting took place in the stunning, top floor dining room, where the oak barrels filled the room below.

Before lunch, which was lovingly prepared by Lorella and her team from the local Ristorante Pasticceria Ferretti, we tasted canapés, paired with two remarkable white wines. Although I won’t attempt to describe them as a connoisseur would, I can assure you that they were both exceptional, although I do have my favourite. Our two-course lunch was light yet delightful, and as the meal progressed, we were presented with three magnificent red wines, each surpassing the previous one in flavour and complexity.

Villa Cosmiana stands as a testament to the passion and dedication of its owners, Sean and Jean-Louis. Their unwavering commitment to respecting the estate’s history while also giving it new life, is the foundation of this remarkable place. From the captivating gardens to the intriguing tales of
restoration, every aspect of Villa Cosmiana tells a story of elegance and beauty.

I invite you to experience this enchanting estate for yourself. Visit these special people, embark on a journey through time, immerse yourself in its rich history, savour the wines, and create memories that will linger long after you have said goodbye to this hidden paradise in Tuscany.
